SUMMARY:2025 San Marco Art Festival
DESCRIPTION:27th San Marco Art Festival\, Balis Park\, \nSan Marco Square\, \nNovember 29th – 30h \n  \n  \nThe  San Marco Art Festival will be held in Balis Park\, San Marco Square (1999 San Marco Blvd\, Jacksonville\, FL 32207) on Saturday and Sunday November 29th – 30th 2025. \n  \n  \nThis is the 27th Art Festival in San Marco. 30-plus artists will pitch their tents in Balis Park for this two-day free Art Festival in the middle of historic San Marco Square. For this event traffic is not blocked off around San Marco Square and free parking is plentiful so our patrons can come and go freely. The art for this festival is carefully selected and includes paintings\, sculpture\, woodwork\, glasswork\, and hand-made jewelry by local and regional Florida artists. See www.sanmarcoartfestival.com for festival detail and a listing of our artists and sponsors \n  \nRula Carr\, Owner\, The Vault at 1930 Art Gallery\, commented on the recent history of the San Marco Art Festival as currently conducted: \n  \n“In 2019 we felt a need to “Bring The Festival Back” to San Marco after what had been an annual festival did not happen for several years! After  emerging from the COVID pandemic in 2022\, and in collaboration with the San Marco Merchants Association\,  the Festival was a resounding success in 2022 throughand 2024 with hundreds of patrons attending each day of the Festival. We are again very excited to promote the 2025 San Marco Art Festival and help support our local artists\, and we ask everyone to help support this event and support our talented artists and our galleries. We are surrounded by art in our daily world\, whether it be in a painting we see that brings us joy\, an advertisement that captures our imagination\, or a cartoon that reaches out and makes us share it with our friends. Art is a big part of humanity\, how we express ourselves and communicate.” \n“Art events such as this are paramount for the future of strengthening ties with our immediate community\, our city and our artists and local small businesses! So\, we ask you to support LOCAL artists and businesses!”   \n  \nBackground Resources \n  \nAbout San Marco Square \nSan Marco Square is a historic business area in the middle of the San Marco Community. Enjoy the annual San Marco Art Festival in Balis Park in the Square. The artists are located surrounding the Fountain of Lions which reflect the neighborhood’s association with the Venice\, Italy business district.\, Take the time to visit San Marco’s many diverse businesses including trendy boutiques\, art galleries\, bookstores\, coffee and tea shops and a wide selection of great cafes and restaurants. \n  \n  \nAbout Balis Park – San Marco Centennial 1925-2025 \nBalis Park is located in the middle of the square at San Marco – a commercial district in south Jacksonville. We are also celebrating the San Marco Centennial in 2025 as the development of the San Marco subdivision began in 1925. One of the first commercial structures (completed in early 1927) was a quaint\, Spanish-style Gulf service station\, in the middle of the square. Gulf oil later replaced the station with a modern version\, and the city purchased the parcel in 1984 for development as a park – which the San Marco Preservation Society and local merchants envisioned as a center piece for the square. Sheffield and his wife Abla Balis were longtime residents of San Marco\, and Mrs. Balis funded the park’s development\, in memory of her husband who passed away in 1976. The dedication ceremony took place in January 1988\, and later improvements included a sound system\, the bronze sculpture windy days\, and landscaping\, which were funded by the estate of Abla Balis and the city.”  (City of Jacksonville.net) \n  \nFestival Details \n1999 San Marco Blvd\, Jacksonville\, Florida 32207 \n  \nSaturday November 29th – 10am to 6pm \nSunday November 30th – 10am to 5pm \n  \nWebsite – www.sanmarcoartfestival.com \nFacebook – https://www.facebook.com/sanmarcoartfestival/ \nInstagram – #sanmarcoartfestival

SUMMARY:Matt Pond PA w/ Bathtub Cig at the Blue Jay Listening Room 1/17
DESCRIPTION:It’s been 20 years since the release of Matt Pond PA’s Several Arrows Later\, and the band is marking the occasion with select shows on the East Coast and Florida. \n  \nAs a trio with strings\, they will perform songs from their critically acclaimed album — including “Halloween\,” “So Much Trouble\,” and “Brooklyn Stars” — alongside other favorites from their catalog—beloved songs from their Polyvinyl Records era and beyond\, including standout independent releases. They’re also marking the album’s 20th anniversary with a limited-edition release featuring demos and acoustic versions\, available at all shows. \n  \nSeveral Arrows Later\, beloved by mpPA fans\, served as a kind of fulcrum in Matt’s musical life. He was hitting his stride as a songwriter—one who constantly mines the natural landscape\, and that of the heart. The album resonated deeply with those who already followed his work\, as well as new listeners\, with whom his intentions seemed to click. \n  \n“When this album came out\, that was when I really started seeing people singing along to the songs\, and they were showing me tattoos of lyrics\,” Matt says. “I wanted to start a modest movement where people believed in their imperfections. And humbly\, I believe it worked.” \n  \nHe says he wrote the album in a “small green room” in Brooklyn. “All my gear was stacked to the ceiling. There was a small path to the bed\, and that’s where I’d sit with my notebook and tape recorder. I was invigorated by the good and the bad of it all. I was embracing how I didn’t fit in—how I will probably never fit in. To me\, the album is a celebration of that realization.”

SUMMARY:Opening Reception + Exhibition Walkthrough // Kendra Frorup: Roots\, Return\, and the Weight of Memory
DESCRIPTION:We invite visitors to an opening reception in conjunction with the exhibition Kendra Frorup: Roots\, Return\, and the Weight of Memory\, from 5:00 to 8:00pm. The artist will give a walkthrough at 6:00pm.  \nFrorup’s mixed-media assemblages and sculptures draw heavily on her Afro-Caribbean roots for inspiration. Her current work references The Bahamas\, where she was born and raised\, as well as her travels abroad\, and incorporates materials such as coconut crowns\, found objects\, cast materials such as metal and concrete\, as well as printmaking\, all of which continue her longtime exploration of how culture influences artistic expression. Frorup describes how the work included in “Roots\, Return\, and the Weight of Memory” evokes “themes of home\, migration\, and the balance between leadership and care\,” ideas central to the exhibition and her “ongoing exploration of Caribbean material culture and diasporic identity.”  \nKendra Frorup has exhibited her work throughout the United States and at museums and institutions in the Caribbean\, France\, and Puerto Rico. In 2022\, the National Gallery of the Bahamas hosted her mid-career retrospective\, The Whimsical Collector. In 2025\, Frorup was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship\, partnering with the University of The Bahamas. She received her M.F.A. in sculpture from Syracuse University. Frorup is currently an Associate Professor of Art and Design at the University of Tampa\, where she teaches sculpture\, printmaking\, and book arts courses.   \nABOUT CRISP-ELLERT ART MUSEUM: CEAM programming is supported through grants from the Dr. JoAnn Crisp-Ellert Fund at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida\, and the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council administered through the St. Johns Cultural Council. Additional support is provided by Volkswagen of St. Augustine\, VyStar Credit Union\, and AC Hotel St. Augustine.  \n
