Rather than rooting for their favorite BattleBots on TV or online after school, a group of pre-teens is designing, building and battling their own combat robots. Their class that encourages creativity through tinkering and critical thinking is one of several at Bolts & Bytes Maker Academy that opened last spring in Jacksonville Beach.

Military brat, performing artist, and tireless advocate for the arts, Young is a cultural leader who successfully combined art and administration as the South Carolina Arts Commission’s director of administration, human resources, and operations for fourteen years.

Over the last decade, a handful of intrepid, entrepreneurial and thirsty pioneers have opened their own craft breweries in Gainesville. While rumors indicate others may be on the way, the breweries currently in operation can be counted on one hand – Swamp Head Brewery (est. 2009), First Magnitude Brewing Company (est. 2014), Blackadder Brewing Company (est. 2016), Cypress & Grove Brewing Company (est. 2017), and Big Top (est. 2018).
The Big 25: JASMYN Celebrates Its Silver Anniversary
Kicking off a year-long celebration of its 25th anniversary, JASMYN alumni, staff, board members, founders, and community supporters danced the night away at the JASMYN Gayla, a glamorous black-tie affair held at TIAA Bank Field’s swanky Assure Club. Alumni from multiple generations attended the sold-out fundraiser. Some of the original youth members are now in their forties, and a lot of them have stayed in touch throughout the years. For others, it was a momentous homecoming and reunion.
4th Annual Jax Poetry Fest
Hope at Hand, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that serves children and adolescents throughout North Florida using poetry, creative expression, journaling, and mindfulness practices, hosted its inaugural Poetry Fest in 2016.
