It was the early days of the pandemic, back in 2020, when professionals the world over were confronted with the stark reality of working from home for the foreseeable future. In my home office, away from the defined parameters of a regulated schedule, my workdays had become long and borderless. The soft edges between day and night contrasted with my sharp, relentless focus on a computer screen from early morning well into the evening. Fielding a carousel of virtual conference calls to stay in touch with my team began to wear on my psyche. It was then that I realized some unique challenges would lay ahead. As part of this locked-down world, I would need to find a way to navigate these unprecedented times as a professional but also personally.
Throughout my life, I’ve always turned to painting and sketching as my escapes. Normally, I could easily make time for those excursions on weekends, where spending a few hours pursuing my passion for watercolor seemed effortless. My subjects typically involve urban scenes or outdoor objects imbued with character. Rustic, time-tested, and complex in their own way, old buildings, shrimp boats, and other weathered things often find themselves on the tip of my brush. I love the challenge of capturing the unique character born of a worn patina, aged to imperfection.
