Let The River Flow
Beaches Fine Arts Series (BFAS) has received a New Music USA Project Grant to bring a unique cross-cultural music experience to our area. As one of 110 projects selected this year by New Music, BFAS will present The River with ETHEL and Native American flutist Robert Mirabal in a performance scheduled for mid-November. In an agreement with the National Park Service, The River will also be performed along the St. Johns River at the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, where local fourth-grade students will experience the show during historical field trips dedicated to the study of Native American culture

The Lightner Museum is thrilled to announce the opening of the “Illuminate: Lightner Museum’s Stained Glass Rediscovered” exhibition. Thanks to a generous donation from Inez McDonald, along with additional donations by the Treasury Venue Collection and the St. Augustine Historic Inns, 15 stained glass windows from the collection of Otto Lightner have been restored.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville (MOCA), a cultural institute of the University of North Florida, reopened on August 11. The new museum experience includes in-person tours as well as live virtual tours of exhibitions to be enjoyed safely at home, both led by the museum’s curatorial and education teams. Museum staff has developed a reopening plan focused on adhering to best practices outlined by national health organizations, while maintaining the integrity of the museum guest experience.

Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and Juilliard School graduate JaMario Stills founded the Phase Eight Theater Company with the mission to “push the boundaries of performance.” As audience members such as Claire Cimino attest, “[With] other theaters you go to see a show, but with Phase Eight you go to have an experience.” In February the experience was the immersive, gourmand play The Food of Love at the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville (MOCA). In March the company’s diverse ensemble devised a play in response to a Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens exhibit. Then the pandemic happened.

This exhibition explores the roles of metal objects in sustaining, unifying and enhancing life in African communities, while demonstrating the aesthetic and expressive power of metal arts. Peace, Power and Prestige includes a diverse range of iron, brass, bronze, gold, copper, silver, and alloyed works created by artists in West, Central, South and East Africa, between the 12th and 21st centuries. The selected objects derive from the Harn Museum collection and private collections, most notably the Drs. John and Nicole Dintenfass collection.

Don Andrews, American Watercolor Society (AWS) instructor for the Jacksonville Watercolor Society’s (JWS) Spring Workshop and juror for the group’s Spring Show, is a nationally known watercolor artist, author and workshop instructor. He was inspired by Andrew Wyeth and watercolorist Millard Sheets, a west coast artist, because of his depictions of color and light. “I’m drawn to watercolor because it is the best medium to convey a sense of light,” he says.

Based on the story by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, this magical musical fable begins as a pilot makes a forced landing on the barren Sahara Desert. He is befriended by a “little” prince from the planet Asteroid B-612. In the days that follow, the pilot learns of the small boy’s history and planet-hopping journeys in which he met a king, a businessman, a historian, and a general. It isn’t until he comes to Earth that the Little Prince learns the secrets of the importance of life from a fox, a snake, and the pilot. Presented by the First Coast Opera, featuring the St. Augustine Youth Choirs.
