STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math at the Cummer Museum

The term STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics, was developed by teachers who realized that an important area of learning that fosters critical thinking and creativity and can be learned through various art courses, was missing from many curricula. In 2013, Duval County Public Schools welcomed an inventive program called the STEAM Cultural Passport, building on a program in the Miami-Dade County Public School district.

Artist. Activist. Augusta Savage.

In 1988, during my tenure as director of Harlem’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the center presented a major exhibition on the life and work of Harlem Renaissance sculptor and cultural arts activist Augusta Savage. It was, to the best of my knowledge, the first and only exhibition ever presented on this seminal figure in African American and American art history. Thirty years later, it is only fitting that the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, the premier museum of art in Jacksonville, has chosen to honor this North Florida native with an exhibition of its own: Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman, a commemorative tribute to one of the leading African American artists of the 20th century.

When cousins Lori Guadagno and Lisa Landwirth Ullmann founded the 501(c)(3) non-profit Art with a Heart in Healthcare (AWAHIH) in 2001, the goal was to enhance the healing process for hospitalized patients and their families through art experiences. AWAHIH has since served thousands of families at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Nemours Children’s Specialty Care, as well as recently at St. Vincent’s Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic under the leadership of Executive Director Christy Ponder (read The Conversation with Ponder on page 38) and MSW Director of Operations/Artist in Residence Lori Presto.
