Thru March 1
Jacksonville-based artist Kedgar Volta presents The Fragility of the Promise, a large scale reactive light and sound installation in the acclaimed Project Atrium series at MOCA Jacksonville, a cultural institute of the University of North Florida. In Project Atrium: Kedgar Volta, Volta explores the modern paradigm of success – an ever-present driving force in today’s society that is both elusive and ephemeral in its manipulation. Volta offered an open invitation to members of the community of Northeast Florida to contribute to the process of constructing the installation made of what he describes as “thousands of components.” The Fragility of the Promise consists of over 1,000 LED fixtures suspended from the ceiling in concentric circles. When viewers position themselves directly underneath the installation, they can affect the behavior of the lights but retain no control over them. From this interaction, a fragile, yet crucial relationship forms between the participant and the piece. The fragility of the connection becomes a testament to the elusive promise of prosperity.
