Publishers Note

The 30th annual Art & Architecture Issue is monumental, not only for Arbus Magazine, but for me personally as well.

Architecture is exciting not only for the ways that it shapes cities and communities but also for the debate that it can spark.

Often referred to as the “mother art” or one of the “seven arts,” architecture is also plays a major role in the development and character of a city and how we live our lives.

AIA Jacksonville & Arbus Magazine Celebrate 30-year Partnership

The relationship between Arbus and AIA Jacksonville came about not only because of the symmetry between the magazine’s focus on art and business, but thanks to architect Tom Fisher. Tom was a partner at Rink, Reynolds, Diamond, Fisher and a true supporter of the arts. He and interior designer Larry Wilson worked together to create the uber-sassy, contemporary Spiller Vincenty Gallery 30 years ago in San Marco. Spiller Vincenty was a gallery which, at the time, was far beyond anything Jacksonville had ever experienced. They had a good run before shutting their doors.

Sadly, Tom passed away just a few years after Arbus launched its first Art & Architecture Issue. Tom was a wonderfully creative, witty man. I’d like to dedicate this 30th anniversary issue, with deep gratitude, to Tom’s memory and to all the architects who have supported this issue and helped it grow and grow into what it is today 30 years later.

Jax Rising: Ashes to Ambition

Architects do so much more than take an idea and run with it. They can refine and expand upon a vision, turning what might have been a humdrum project into an articulation of form, function, and beauty.  Architects take your vision and give it form, explore its possibilities, raise it to new levels, and then integrate it into your building site and the community at large. They bring knowledge, efficiency, environmental awareness, and brilliant design…inspiring creation of a better built environment.

As Jacksonville continues rising from the ashes it is on the precipice of ambition and identity. One such example taking shape is Pearl Square in downtown Jacksonville (see page 18).

Enjoy the art and architecture that surrounds your everyday life.
