Peter Blunt and Virginia Cantore are friends, and also colleagues at CoRK studios. Both artists defy conventions within their chosen medium – Cantore’s colorful “splash” paintings go beyond brush strokes, and Blunt’s furniture pieces have become sculpture with a message. On exhibit are works from Blunt’s table series, in which he focuses on finding ways to express value in a form which is often dismissed as merely functional craft. Cantore’s abstract work springs from an early study of Japanese ink painting, suiboku, and has evolved to include Western elements of structure, color and whimsy. The juxtaposition of hard edge form with spontaneous color applications unfolds many meanings.
