The Outings Project
I recently had the remarkable experience of working alongside Julien de Casabianca and dozens of community artists and activists as we instigated a new phase of the Outings Project in Jacksonville. For just over a week, Casabianca was artist in residence at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens and in the streets of our city. More than forty images from the museum’s Permanent Collection were released from their frames, joining the dozen that popped up on buildings and in parks last summer. About the Outings Project Outings is a participatory...

All shapes, sizes, colors, ages and abilities: all runners. Some are new to the sport, others have run their entire lives – 60 years plus. From 5Ks to 100-mile Ultras, transcendent runs and torturous ones, these athletes challenge themselves to go faster or farther, to discover the limits of who they are and what they can do, for a hat or medal or just to say, “I am a runner.” Photos by Laura Evans 36 of the current 77 I Am A Runner portraits will be shown in the Unity Plaza Gallery through March 30. See some of the portraits...

The seed of an idea planted nearly fifteen years ago has blossomed into a 450th anniversary legacy project at the St. Augustine Art Association. The TOUCH St. Augustine Sculpture Garden, officially opening in October, is an extensive exterior renovation designed to celebrate the arts and honor St. Augustine history, while providing greater access for people with disabilities. The garden is one of three initiatives to make art and history come alive for the blind by engaging all the senses. First came the Tactile Art Show in 2002 when local...

When Lawrence DuBow was fourteen, his mom got him a job as an usher at Chicago’s Civic Opera. Earlier this month, his name became attached to a Jacksonville venue where three-thousand area students annually will have their own first operatic experiences. DuBow made it possible for the twenty-five-year-old auditorium at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts (DA) to receive $200,000 in technical upgrades needed to receive high-definition video live from New York’s Metropolitan Opera. The first signals came through on October 3, just in time for a...

A recent research study out of the University of California at Berkeley suggests that the experience of awe and other positive emotions, such as those felt at an art museum when viewing an inspiring image or experiencing a natural wonder, may have a significant impact on health and immunity. Dr. Jennifer Stellar, one of the study’s authors, backed this up, stating, “Rather than seeing a walk through the park or a trip to the museum as an indulgence, we hope people will view these kinds of experiences as important ways to promote a healthy...

What’s in your head? When posed with that question countless images can go through your mind – an office desk piled with projects that need to get done, the Jaguars game that you are looking forward to this weekend, or even something as mundane as the pot roast you are going to have for dinner tonight. When young patients at Wolfson Children’s Hospital were asked the same question, “What’s in your head?” they each answered that question by painting a mask. The masks painted by those children are now on display at MOCA Jacksonville as part of...

Patrons of the Hearts’ unique approach has a 100% success rate There are two things that make Patrons of the Hearts (POTH) unique. The first is that they bring children with congenital heart disease from their home countries to Jacksonville for specialized treatment. The second is precisely where that treatment takes place – our city’s state-of-the-art, fully equipped, and equally compassionate Wolfson Children’s Hospital (WCH). The equation has resulted in a one-hundred percent success rate. In a partnership with WCH and UF Pediatric...

Baptist Health believes that health and healing involves the whole person — body, mind and spirit. With that in mind, Baptist strives to create environments that support healing — for patients, families and caregivers.
This is accomplished by providing access to visual and performing arts, gardens, and natural light at all of their hospitals to assist in the healing process and enhance the patient and family experience.
Celebrating La Florida
39th Annual Art & Antiques Show Highlights Florida’s Spanish Heritage Florida’s roots reach deep into Spanish culture and history. Indeed, our shores were the first in North America to be touched by European feet, and those feet were Spanish. In 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon, the infamous conquistador who had embarked on a tireless quest to find the miraculous Fountain of Youth, discovered an “island,” which he named La Florida, in honor of the Pascua Florida, or Feast of Flowers (Easter). His precise landing spot is unknown but was likely...
