Bright Lights, Little City
For five hundred years the old and the new have combined to create the urban tapestry that is St. Augustine, Florida. Today, the multitude of artists who call this charming historic city home have helped put St. Augustine on the art map and it is known as one of the “100 Best Small Art Towns in America.” The atmosphere is intoxicating and it’s the kind of place where you can walk around for an afternoon and feel as if you’ve gone to some faraway European locale.
Slovenia: The Medieval Emerald City
Slovenia is one of the loveliest, cleanest and most colorful places Iʼve ever been to. Once part of Yugoslavia, Slovenia borders Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Croatia to the south and southeast, and Hungary to the northeast. During the years when Yugoslavia was in a tragic war with the Serbians, Croations, and Bosnians, spurred on by so-called ethnic cleansing, Slovenia somehow managed to remain fairly peaceful.
Sailing the Turkish ‘Turquoise’ Coast
I grew up around sailing…my dad loved to sail and seemed to always have some sort of sailing vessel. I remember having a love/hate feeling toward the sport at times, especially after getting caught in a horrible storm at Porpoise Point—where the Matanzas Inlet and the ocean meet in St. Augustine—one afternoon. It was a frightening day that ended in SOS calls and a boat rescue. However, even that experience did not diminish my love of sailboats for long, and as an adult, the idea of sailing the Greek Islands and Turkish Coast has held a certain intrigue.
Mushing in Alaska — Wild Beauty
When I first told my friends I wanted to go mushing across the Alaskan tundra, most thought I had utterly and completely lost my mind. But to me, mushing across the tundra and experiencing the vast, untouched beauty of this unique wilderness…witnessing natural phenomena, such as cryospheres, sun dogs, and sastrugi…was, well…captivating, mysterious, intriguing. And my response was, “Why not?”
