In this, our annual issue that champions excellence in local dining, we share restaurants that are favorites of both Arbus’ staff and Arbus’ friends and readers. Specifically, locally-owned ones. We listen to the buzz of the new and go back to the tried-and-true, ending up with these spots—the places that we feel make our neighborhoods distinctive destinations and our city a fun place to explore through dining.

The Art of Meat, Poultry, Dairy and Eggs Within the Slow Food Circle.
To get a bigger picture of our local food story, we talked with some of the area’s top chefs, restauranteurs, and farmers. We’re calling it Mindful Dining, and this first segment delves into proteins – raising livestock; sourcing meat, seafood, and dairy for restaurant use; and preparing it all in-house at local spots that are part of the farm-to-table and slow food ethos.
The Outings Project
I recently had the remarkable experience of working alongside Julien de Casabianca and dozens of community artists and activists as we instigated a new phase of the Outings Project in Jacksonville. For just over a week, Casabianca was artist in residence at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens and in the streets of our city. More than forty images from the museum’s Permanent Collection were released from their frames, joining the dozen that popped up on buildings and in parks last summer. About the Outings Project Outings is a participatory...

Gerhard Richter once said, “Art is the highest form of hope,” and hope is the message in Ambler Hutchinson’s haunting solo exhibit at Jacksonville’s Florida Mining Gallery. Visual Artifacts – One Mind Two Realities takes the audience on a visual journey through the dark hallways of Hutchinson’s mind, to the excruciatingly gorgeous place where her depression, anxiety and mental illness find a catharsis. A work of art symbolizes the artist’s profound anticipation – it exposes their deepest wants and resolves internal conflicts. A work of art is...

All shapes, sizes, colors, ages and abilities: all runners. Some are new to the sport, others have run their entire lives – 60 years plus. From 5Ks to 100-mile Ultras, transcendent runs and torturous ones, these athletes challenge themselves to go faster or farther, to discover the limits of who they are and what they can do, for a hat or medal or just to say, “I am a runner.” Photos by Laura Evans 36 of the current 77 I Am A Runner portraits will be shown in the Unity Plaza Gallery through March 30. See some of the portraits...

Christina Hope’s ethereal photographs transport viewers to a timeless and serene underwater world. Her exquisite figure studies, bathed in shimmering waves of shadow and sunlight, offer glimpses of dreamlike realms inhabited by water angels. Elegant nudes reminiscent of Greco-Roman sculpture float and twist gracefully, veiled by diaphanous swaths of fabric, bouquets of flowers, and musical instruments. An exhibition of work by the artist opened at Jacksonville Beach’s J. Johnson Gallery on November 13 and runs through January 21, 2016. ...

In a big first, food will soon be grown on City of Jacksonville property. Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) is partnering with the city to open the Riverside Avondale Community Garden, centrally located in the neighborhoods it serves on the corner of Park Street and Azalea Terrace – across the street from Willowbranch Park. RAP is hoping to break ground this fall and have the garden open for planting soon thereafter.

The seed of an idea planted nearly fifteen years ago has blossomed into a 450th anniversary legacy project at the St. Augustine Art Association. The TOUCH St. Augustine Sculpture Garden, officially opening in October, is an extensive exterior renovation designed to celebrate the arts and honor St. Augustine history, while providing greater access for people with disabilities. The garden is one of three initiatives to make art and history come alive for the blind by engaging all the senses. First came the Tactile Art Show in 2002 when local...
