St. Johns Cultural Council Establishes Emergency Fund for Local Artists and Small Arts Organizations
In response to hardships created by event cancellations and venue closures related to the Coronavirus, the St. Johns Cultural Council has established an Arts Emergency Fund to support members of the St. Johns County arts community.
Peace, Power and Prestige: Metal Arts in Africa
This exhibition explores the roles of metal objects in sustaining, unifying and enhancing life in African communities, while demonstrating the aesthetic and expressive power of metal arts. Peace, Power and Prestige includes a diverse range of iron, brass, bronze, gold, copper, silver, and alloyed works created by artists in West, Central, South and East Africa, between the 12th and 21st centuries. The selected objects derive from the Harn Museum collection and private collections, most notably the Drs. John and Nicole Dintenfass collection.
Don Andrews Visits Jacksonville Watercolor Society
Don Andrews, American Watercolor Society (AWS) instructor for the Jacksonville Watercolor Society’s (JWS) Spring Workshop and juror for the group’s Spring Show, is a nationally known watercolor artist, author and workshop instructor. He was inspired by Andrew Wyeth and watercolorist Millard Sheets, a west coast artist, because of his depictions of color and light. “I’m drawn to watercolor because it is the best medium to convey a sense of light,” he says.
The Little Prince
Based on the story by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, this magical musical fable begins as a pilot makes a forced landing on the barren Sahara Desert. He is befriended by a “little” prince from the planet Asteroid B-612. In the days that follow, the pilot learns of the small boy’s history and planet-hopping journeys in which he met a king, a businessman, a historian, and a general. It isn’t until he comes to Earth that the Little Prince learns the secrets of the importance of life from a fox, a snake, and the pilot. Presented by the First Coast Opera, featuring the St. Augustine Youth Choirs.
A Day Without Violence Art and Poetry Contest
Betty Griffin Center (BGC) is accepting submissions from St. Johns County students for the 2021 ‘A Day Without Violence Art & Poetry Contest’ through April 15, 2020.
Loving Beethoven
In 2020, the world will celebrate Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday anniversary. The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach, in partnership with MIMMA (Interactive Music Museum in Malaga, Spain), is paying tribute to this milestone thanks to the traveling musical installation, Loving Beethoven.
